Almalay loved to sit on the front porch in grandma's old rocking chair. She liked to rummage through her sewing basket for bits and bobs, and knew she'd someday be a great seamstress.

When she wasn't at school, Hattie could usually be found in the kitchen. She had one heck of a sweet tooth & was always creating new (and not always tasty) confections. But she knew someday folks would pay a pretty penny for her sugared delights.

Paper Good(ness)! Oh my!

Hello!

I've been keeping busy with all sorts of pumpkin & autumn inspired ideas. Including some new packaging & cards, which I absolutely adore! I am thrilled with how theses came out, and so happy to have a monstrous mound of peppermint twist twine courtesy of my wonderful mom! Thanks mom!

Hello, hello!

A few new-ish things I've just finished up, I sometimes forget to post! I'll blame it on the heat and humidity. Ninety-six degrees and eighty percent humidity is a bit much, me thinks! Time to move to a cooler climate. Although, as much as I hate the heat, Las Vegas seems to keep reminding me it's there for some reason =) Decisions, decisions...I am ever so bad at making them!

After the Storm

After a brief, but severe, afternoon storm, the temperature and humidity dropped enough to actually be able to breath outdoors. I seized the opportunity to go for a walk as the early evening hours are my favourite time of day. The musty aroma of the swamp & parched earth is a smell I'd love to bottle! Along the way, I found a welcoming critter or two, including this little fellow who I'm certain was bashful - he dipped under the water every time I focused on him.

It has been too long since we've had a decent rain. The temperature cooled the air down and there was actually a slight mist on the lake.

Spanish Moss is a nuisance to native trees, but it sure has that southern charm. It always reminds me of rocking chairs and big front porches.

A friendly neighbourhood cat whom I've called Stumps (he doesn't seem to mind). He does have the shortest legs I've ever seen on a cat, however I was kind enough to post his portrait while he was sitting, rather than standing =)

With the passing of the last Ziegfeld girl, and the long lost days of Old Hollywood, here's a picture-y post of some of the most fantastical costumes (and the glamourous women who wore them so well!) It is so easy to become lost in nostalgia when the times have changed so much. Though technology has provided us with many advancements, I must say I often find myself longing for simpler times! So much is lost over the years, when less becomes tangible in this digital age =/

The UnNamed, the End

And here they are, the final group of wanderlings. While tallying them up & rearranging them in their temporary abode, I realised that I had made an extra two! I somehow lost count, so I think I will stash those two away for myself =)

I enjoyed painting this series, and will definitely miss working on them. Now I can carry on with some new things, including bookmarks & bookplates as well as my display for the upcoming Art & Wine Stroll

Sunday Market

We just managed to get to the market before the rain came down. Luckily it's just around the corner, so we didn't get too soggy!
Many new vendors the last few weeks, including a booth with the most scrumptious home baked breads & pastries. I was sidetracked by the delicious aroma & failed to snap a few pics. So alas, it's a fruit & veggie post.

And just because - leafy & green, but not of the edible type; A permanent storefront fixture, the Dancing Bear Topiary.

County Fair

Hello, Hello!

Last week while visiting my mom, we ventured to the county fair. Some folks go for the rides, I just go to look at them! Well, the lights, that is. And the food. Cotton Candy. Carmel Apples. Funnel Cakes. Elephant Ears. Larger than Necessary Corn Dogs. Fudge. And all sorts of other stuff that is so fantastically bad.

Unfortunately, the fair seems to have lost that old bit of nostalgic goodness. Well, maybe it is still like that in smaller towns. Old fashioned hometown carnivals, the kind with fire-engine red rides and bright lights. And ride attendants who don't look like they just walked out of prison, yikes!

I suppose they've retained a bit of old-timeyness with the tantalizing snake girl, and various side show freaks du jour. I recall stepping inside some of those well travelled tents when I was a child, probably some of which have provided me with life long nightmares (that I never really knew what caused them!). Good times, however!

More from the Crooked Red House...

It's been busy around here these days. And a bit chilly. Old man winter has come to visit and he even brought a very wee bit of snow! But it was snow none the less, and that is a marvelous thing in Central Florida! At least it feels winter-y out, as it doesn't feel so winter-y inside with the decorations and baubles finally packed away. It always looks so barren, and of course less sparkly (but if you look hard enough, in all the cracks & crevises one is always certain to find a bit of glitter!)

Going Nutty

Hello, hello! It all started with a few acorns I collected in my pocket. Really. I kept stepping on them all over the sidewalks & grass.

After spending countless hours matching the caps to the acorns, and convincing myself I still needed more...they are far too cute to leave helplessly lying on the ground (and abandoned by squirrels!)

Not certain of a shape, I decided to use a 12" x 12" set of stretcher bars I had lying around. And I am quite pleased with the outcome. The recipient (mom), was quite pleased as well =) Not too difficult, more like a puzzle trying to sort out what fits & where. I think I might have brought in an ant or two as well. And maybe a few grubbs =o

Sugary Dreams

Cranberry Hootycreeks

I found this recipe at recipezaar and they are scrumptious! Very moist & the perfect mix of tart cranberries & sugary white chocolate.

Prep:
2 1/4 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup softened butter
2/3 cup brown sugar
2/3 cup white sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 cup rolled oat
1 cup dried cranberries
1 cup white chocolate chips
1 cup chopped nuts

Baking:
Combine flour, baking soda and salt.
Cream butter, then add sugars, eggs & vanilla.
Mix in flour mixture & oats, then cranberries, chips & nuts.
Drop by spoonfuls on greased cookie sheet.
Bake at 350 for 8-10 min.
Makes 3 doz. Cookies

Ooey Gooey White Chocolate Brownies

and this bit of white chocolate-y goodness came from
Duh-licious

Prep:
1/2 cup of butter (softened)
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup flour
1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Baking:
1. Preheat oven at 350'C
2. Cream butter and sugar, and add the ingredients in the order listed.
3. Pour batter in a greased 9x12 rectangular pan (or similar)
4. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and tooth pick comes out clean when inserted in the centre

Large amounts of sugar tend to give me horrible nightmares. I think I'm in for some sleepless nights (until the cookies are gone!)

Woe is Me, I Said to the Tree

Just a little tale from this evening's Fir Tree adventure (luckily, no cameras were involved). Never one to have a modest, nor simple tree, I always opt for the one that is Clark Griswold size, regardless of the space I am fitting it in. So, I drove home with the tree poking me in the back of the head, unable to see out of the rear or passenger side mirrors. I could have had it strapped to the top of my car, which is what I've done ever since I made the mistake of putting it inside. I'm still finding pine needles from trees long since past!

And just because I am stubborn (me?), and had a few other bits and bobs to grab from the store, I had the ever-so-kind lad struggle to squeeze a just over 8ft tree inside my car. Yes, I've just condemned my car to a lifetime supply of dried up fir needles.

Arriving home, to an empty house (four legged critters aren't much help in cases like this) - do I attempt to bring it in on my own, or leave it in the car overnight? I'm certain you already know the answer to this. Once I dragged it out of the back of the car and it was on the ground, there was no turning back. That tree was coming up those 20 or so steps with me, one way or another. Two steps at a time. Wow. I think I might have passed out and not even known. Where did my pulse go? I somehow became Wonder Woman for a brief moment in time.

I decided I really should turn the outside light off. Pulling an 8ft+ tree up a flight of stairs in the dark is most definitely the safest thing to do (especially when you could be seen by passer-byes!) Getting it up the stairs was only half the battle, now it was trying to turn it to get it through the door. I prevailed! Sap in my hair, sap on the cat, bruised thumbs - now all I have to do is get it in the stand. Oh, darn. It doesn't fit. The trunk is too big.

I'd never had this problem before. Did i just purchase a mutant tree? Not giving up just yet. Back in the car, back to the store. I am now the proud owner of tree stand for "husky" trees. Yay! It fits! But...there is one low hanging branch preventing me from getting it in the stand properly. Let me put one of those Henckels knives to good use. Twenty minutes later I realised that knives do not make good saws, no matter how sharp they are! But again, I eventually won.

The tree is in the stand, and upright! I didn't say it was straight - but I'll save that 'til morn.

If only I'd opted for the smaller, modest tree, hehe =)

I'll post photos this weekend once she is decorated in gleaming orbs of silver and red (and a bit of peppermint swirl), and sparkling with thousands of lights =)

A (re)Vamping of Sorts...

When Edward Cullen was still wearing diapers, the original "vampire clan"(has there really ever been another?) roamed the west coast seaside. Prompted by yet another viewing of The Lost Boys the other evening, I was left pondering what has become of some of the lesser-known fellows from the film - or rather, what on earth do they look like now? Father Time has a curious way of smiling upon some, and frowning upon others (as the photos below indicate, hehe).

Isn't it funny how certain films, leave such a lasting impression on us. And I find this one most difficult to pass up every time it is on tele! Though it resides in my dvd collection, I just can't bring myself to not watch it when I find that it is on. I have that issue with several films, but this vampy, by all means legendary film, tops my list.

And whilst being nostalgic (it was the mid 80's after all), I stumbled across some other tidbits of interest from the film; The filming location for Grandad's house, was the once grand Pogonip Lodge in Santa Cruz.

Once home to one of the nations most scenic golf courses, and later a polo club, the Pogonip now sits in rehab purgatory =/ Apparently the city folks cannot decide to fix her up, or flatten her out.

The bridge, it seemed so much more ominous when clouded with fog (and higher as well!) But, that's why the special effects folks get paid the big bucks, hehe.

The Santa Cruz Boardwalk, most of which is still there; though sadly, some of it was destroyed by the earthquake in 1989, including the outdoor stage. Speaking of the outdoor stage, certainly not to be overlooked, nor forgotten - the hot waxy mess that was the saxophone player, Tim "I Still Believe" Cappello. (Whom, by the way, I cannot find any pictures of since this film)

And I do think that about wraps it up!

Oh yes, I did almost forget, when did vampires become socially acceptable? Was it only when they became sparkly?

As the old crow flies, better late than never! I've been so busy that I've neglected to share my pumpkins with everyone. So, here they are - pumpkins of Hallowe'en past & present (though, he must make an unfortunate trip to the bin in the morning - he's sprouting mold =/) And, a few not so great snapshots of the neighbourhood haunts, some homes had over 2000 ~~scavengers~~ trick or treater's!

I will be participating in the Celebration Art Stroll on November 6th from 6-8pm, stop by and visit the local artisans as they craft their goods by the Lakeside =)

Hello, hello!

Here's hoping everyone is having a more autumn-y autumn than here in Florida! A brisk autumn-esque wind teased us but a few weeks ago, and left as soon is it went =/ If it weren't for the pumpkin patch around the corner, and all of my lovely scrumptious fall scents, I'd think it was mid-summer. Boooo. o.O

Here is the next Curiously Creeping Coast painting, a charming little nymph called Thora, who sadly enough - has gone missing.

October Spookies

The autumn air brings an evening glow, and a very subtle but not un-seen (or un-felt) breeze. Gone are the humid summer days, making way for the best time of the year! I've only gotten some of my favourite Halloween fancies out this year, and thought I would share =)

I love, love, love vintage Halloween decorations - and I love to make them as well. This one is part Martha Stewart (the letters), and part something I put together out of old Victorian greetings. These are wonderful to drape from mantles and doorways!

A cast iron witches boot propped upon my favourite little shelf (make note, next to my favourite little 4-legged man!)

Another little something that I made last year. I love the spooky silhouettes, that I have paired with a baroque orange & black paper.

If only I was a lilliputian...

Normally I make my own greetings for the holidays, but I've found these pre-made cards that I am quite fond of =)

A few more stills from Burton's "Alice in Wonderland"! I must say, I'm ever as excited as I was awaiting for the release of "Nightmare" many (many) moons ago, hehe! Only 8 months to go!

The Little Fox

She found him beneath a tree when he was no bigger than her hand; a little bit sad, for she must return him to the peppermint land. The sweetest little fox she's ever known, and over the the months, boy how he's grown! Friends of the forest they will forever be, the girl and the fox found beneath a tree.

since it wasn't 90+ degrees last evening (and i had a good bit of old bread) - i went around the corner to visit the ever-so fine neighbourhood duck brigade.

on my way to the waterfront, i stopped by the house next door which has a beautiful crepe myrtle tree, almost in full bloom. these trees are abundant here, when the wind blows its like a magical snow storm of pink and white petals.

a few notable characters...mrs. quackers as i call her (the white duck) - her partner in crime happens to be the wee little mallard seen in the rear (with his rear to the camera!) even in the bird world, opposites attract =)

canna lilies border the waterfront down the river and to the lake, oh so pretty!
